Course Description

This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached article pertaining to alternatives for families: a cognitive-behavioral therapy (AF-CBT).  Children of families that experience conflict, coercion and/or physical abuse have a substantial risk of developing significant psychiatric, behavioral and adjustment difficulties.  AF-CBT is an evidence-supported treatment approach to that incorporates several behavioral and cognitive-behavioral methods in an effort to address this critical problem.

In Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT), Participants will first consider fundamental properties of AF-CBT, such as that it: reflects a comprehensive treatment strategy; integrates several therapeutic approaches; treats children and parents simultaneously; discourages aggressive or violent behavior; and tailors treatment to meet specific needs and circumstances.  Next, Participants will learn about AF-CBT treatment phases and the specific therapy elements unique to children, parents and families.  Additionally, Participants will look at target populations for AF-CBT and will also consider the limitations to its application.  Participants will consider the effectiveness of AF-CBT in outcomes studies and will also become familiar with its reputation amongst experts and agencies.  Finally, Participants will examine a number a factors that should be considered when choosing an AF-CBT therapist, in particular, Participants will study AF-CBT training and will review suggested questions to ask treatment providers

This course is intended to provide child welfare professionals, mental health professionals and social workers with an overview of AF-CBT.
