Course Description

This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached article pertaining to domestic violence and the child welfare system.  Domestic violence and child maltreatment are both widespread societal problems that often go hand and hand.  Children and youth exposed to domestic violence can suffer from a number of behavioral, social, emotional, cognitive, attitudinal and long-term problems that vary in level of severity.

In Domestic Violence and the Child Welfare System, Participants will first learn about important domestic violence definitions.  Next, Participants will consider the scope of the problem.  Additionally, Participants will explore the three categories of challenges faced by children and youth exposed to domestic violence: behavioral, social and emotional problems; cognitive and attitudinal problems; and long-term problems.  Also, Participants will become familiar with how the following additional factors influence the impact of domestic violence on children: nature of the violence; age of the child; elapsed time since exposure; gender; and presence of child physical or sexual abuse.  Next, Participants will examine promising practices for building and sustaining community partnerships as well as challenges faced to addressing domestic violence. Additionally, Participants will analyze the following specific approaches to domestic violence intervention: trauma-informed practice; differential response; and collaboration.  Also, Participants will consider the importance of early intervention for teens and will be provided with resources with information and materials dealing with this issue.  Next, Participants will become familiar with several examples of strategies used to support more effective collaboration between domestic violence services and child welfare systems.  Finally, Participants will be provided with resources, training and tools relating to areas covered in this article.
