Course Description

This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached article regarding preparation for permanency.  Children leaving out-of-home care for adoption or other family permanency require preparation and support in order to understand past events and to process feelings connection to their experiences of abuse and neglect, separation, loss, rejection and abandonment.

In Preparing Children and Youth for Adoption or Other Family Permanency, Participants will explore the evolution of permanency preparation.  Next, Participants will consider the importance of addressing past experiences in preparation for permanency, utilizing foundational principles in creating an overall approach for support and guidance and permanency preparation practices.  Additionally, Participants will learn from a number of actual permanency preparation programs.  Finally, Participants will be provided with a number of tools that workers may find useful in their permanency work with children and youth

This course is intended to provide child welfare professionals, mental health professionals and social workers with an overview of the services available for preparing children and youth for permanency relationships.

  • To be familiar with the evolution of permanency preparation practices
  • To be aware of promising practices for preparing children and youth for permanency
  • To explore a number of promising programs
  • To consider useful tools and resources for permanency work with children and youth

 

Course Requirements

You will be expected to review all materials provided and pass the post-test with a minimum of 80%, in order to receive your certificate of completion. You will also be required to complete a course evaluation. Once you have satisfactorily completed the post-test and submitted your evaluation, you will be able to download your certificate.
